Hand built fitted painted kitchen

Simon Thacker bespoke fitted kitchens are hand built in our UK workshops and on site in your home using traditional construction methods, materials and wood of the highest quality, in particular, Redwood (joinery quality Pine), Oak, Mahogany, Ash, Alder, Maple, Beech, Tulip, Sapelle, Cherry, Walnut and reclaimed Pine.

We do not have any standard size units. If a kitchen needs a 342mm wide unit, then we manufacture a 342mm wide unit - unlike most modern kitchens that have standard units of 300mm to 1000mm spaced in 100mm increments. We do not insert fillets to make up the space to suit the size of the available unit.

Hand Built in a variety of woods

All our fitted kitchen carcasses are hand built from 18mm (3/4 inch) thick wood of your choice with 9mm thick tongue and groove as the backing. All the components of the carcass are then glued and screwed together for added strength. A modern kitchen manufactured from MDF or chipboard will then have a door added to the front of the carcass and that will be the end of the manufacturing process for that type of kitchen.

We further enhance the appearance and practicality of your fitted kitchen unit by adding a framework to the front of the carcass in which the door will be contained. The door will be fitted flush to the framework with traditional brass butt hinges that are individually rebated into the door and framework. The framework and doors are 25mm (1 inch) thick.

Once the doors are fitted, no adjustment will ever be required unlike those modern sprung loaded hinges that make the door bang when closed. All doors are jointed by mortise and tenon and are available in several styles; if your particular style is not within our pattern book, then we will manufacture your requirements.

If drawers are required, then we traditionally dovetail the joints and insert solid wood bottoms so no sagging takes place.

Hand Painted or Stained Finish Kitchens

Dependant upon the finish required, we then stain or paint the kitchen to the colour of your choice. With both stained and painted kitchens, we do not recommend painting the inside of kitchen units as oiling all components will suffice and gives a far better appearance in the long term. The stained kitchen will be varnished or oiled to give that wipe down surface.

Granite Kitchen Worktops

Finally, worktops have to be fitted. Granite is the only type of work surface that enhances the kitchen and is far more practical and durable than any other surface. With dozens of colours to choose from, we use a specialist company to template, fabricate, polish and install this very tactile of surface. We do recommend that splash backs of 100mm (4 inches) in height are added to the rear of the work surfaces which removes the need for wall tiles.

See our portfolio pages for some examples of our hand made kitchens.
